Now and Then

A Book of Friends: May it include the wise, the witty, and the shrewd…- introductory line to the yearbook of Louise Elizabeth Roemer in the year 1920 (she circled the word wise and wrote “that’s me”)

Set on a wooded hilltop overlooking scenic Mount Vernon, Iowa, Cornell College is a private, four-year liberal arts college offering students an extraordinary array of opportunities— in the classroom, on campus, and around the world.- from www.cornellcollege.edu

Located at the heart of campus, Bowman-Carter is the oldest residence hall at Cornell and home to approximately 110 women. Bowman-Carter Hall stands out on campus due to its distinctive architecture and decor. This building’s residents have the good fortune of having a “formal lounge” complete with a chandelier and antique reproduction furnishings. This area of the building is used by many groups for their special events, and thus is often a center of activity on-campus. Bowman-Carter residents have an appreciation for the long history of this building, as well as its recently refurbished common areas.- Cornell website

The home of “our gang”- Roemer’s scrapbook in regards to Bowman

It would appear that someone had a little too much fun, I returned home last night only to learn that that someone had vomited all over the hallway. I hope you are all alright. While I am unopposed to responsible, of-age drinking, I have to say that the one thing I request of all of you is for everyone to simply be smart, responsible adults- e-mail from current R.A. in Bowman

To get rid of this cold- ambition of Betty Swenson

Cornell is a cosmopolitan college. Thirty two states and foreign countries are represented in this group. The College is fortunate in that the attendance, although large, is not too large to afford every student individual attention in the classroom and opportunity for broad cultural development.- from pamphlet in Roemer’s scrapbook
